What types of classes do you offer?

Ben Hicks Yoga Studio offers Traditional Hatha Yoga. Pronounced Ha = Sun, Ta = Moon. Traditional yoga balances the body’s energy, supports organ systems, musculoskeletal system, and the nervous system. I also teach Somatic movement therapy and core body exercise. Class levels are categorized by intensity; low, medium, and high to promote inclusion and highlight individuality.

What is your experience and training in Yoga?

My personal experience with yoga goes back to breakdancing as a kid. Many similar movements and poses found in yoga and martial arts were borrowed and used in early breakdancing. As an adult in 2005 I began taking Kung Fu classes at a studio where my teachers were also followers of Ashtanga Yoga and former students of Tim Miller. My teacher held Sunday classes once a month teaching Ashtanga Yoga to his students. I was exposed to a blend of yoga and Chinese Martial Arts at this time.

Later in 2006 after sustaining a back injury I began taking Yoga classes regularly at LA Fitness as part of my pain management program. These classes were Hatha Yoga classes. In addition to this I began my home practice study in Kriya Yoga which are the teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda. This led me to enrolled in a school for Massage Therapy and Asian Arts in Carlsbad, CA. In 2007 I transferred to a school in Encinitas, CA for Holistic Health and Naturopathy which is where I first studied Herbology, Nutrition, Body Somatics, Movement Therapy and Yoga.

After completing my Yoga Teacher Training in 2009 in Encinitas, CA, my teaching experience began with friends at the beaches of Encinitas and Carlsbad, CA or volunteering to work with some of my previous teachers. My first paid experience teaching yoga was in 2010 at LA Fitness and I have been teaching yoga ever since.

In 2015 I continued my education in India where I completed a yoga teacher training program in Traditional Hatha Yoga and accumulated teaching hours to certify as an RYT 500. I am currently registered with the Yoga Alliance as a Yoga School, a Yoga Instructor and Yoga Education provider. I will have accumulated over 10,000 hours of teaching experience in yoga this year.

My certifications include: Registered Yoga Teacher RYT 500, Holistic Health Practitioner, Clinical Master Herbalist, Clinical Nutrition, Jin Shin Jyutsu Practitioner, Licensed Massage Therapist. I hold licenses in Arizona and in California as well as holding a National Board Certification for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork.

My passion for Yoga comes from a desire to create a lifestyle that is sustainable. By applying progression not perfection, the practice is always changing and moving forward.

In addition to classes at your studio, how can we get involved with your practice?

I am the sole instructor of my yoga program, teaching 21 separate classes a week designed and based on my personal practice. I host Free meet ups monthly as a way to educate, show gratitude, give back and inspire appreciation for our environment. Including 4 Nature Hikes in the Fall/Winter and 4 Full Moon Paddles in the Spring/ Summer months as well as Stand Up Paddleboard Yoga and Qi Gong classes. Every year on Thanksgiving weekend I host the Lake Havasu It’s All Good Yoga Festival that includes guest instructors and is entirely free and driven by community.
